Se anuncian los candidatos definitivos para la elección del Secretario General de Interpol

Se han cerrado las candidaturas y se han anunciado los candidatos definitivos para la elección del Secretario General de Interpol.

Después de nuestro último post sobre los corredores y jinetes de la selección   El pakistaní Faisal Shahkar es la incorporación sorpresa anunciada después de la fecha límite del 31 de enero de 2024. El Sr. Shahkar ha tenido una distinguida carrera en la policía de Pakistán y como Asesor policial de la ONU y jefe del Departamento de Operaciones Policiales de la ONU.

Shahkar se une a Mubita Nawa, de Zambia, como uno de los dos candidatos considerados "outsiders" en la elección. Los favoritos para el puesto siguen siendo el británico Stephen Kavanagh y la brasileña Valdecy Urqiza.

De ser nombrado, Urqiza sería el primer Secretario General sudamericano al frente de la organización. En una reciente entrevista para Reuters  subrayó que todos los anteriores titulares del puesto procedían de sólo cinco países, cuatro de Europa y Estados Unidos;

“The organization runs the risk of losing credibility and losing legitimacy if it isolates itself. What we need for Interpol’s success is plurality ..We need all countries to feel included, for all regions to be served,”

He also claimed Brazil’s stated neutrality in global affairs was an advantage –

“Interpol cannot be used for geopolitical ends, so it is important that the secretary general comes from a neutral country, and Brazil has that.”

RNM maintains the view that none of the candidates should be entirely dismissed, as the final vote’s outcome will depend on the unpredictable horsetrading between nations. However, with the frontrunners’ strong positions, newcomers like Mr. Shahkar may find it challenging to gain momentum for their candidacy through lobbying and campaigning. The voting choices of nations outside of Europe and the West may ultimately determine the outcome.
